East York is a wonderful family-friendly neighbourhood full of mature trees and surrounded by parkland. You can walk or bike the lush Taylor Creek Trail from Don Mills Road all the way to Victoria Park Avenue. East York itself has many parks and parkettes, public pools, splash-pads and playgrounds and in the winter public Skating rinks. There are still many old fashioned “corner stores” in and around East York and residents are always out and about jogging, walking their kids to school or taking their dog for a walk.
In contrast to the quiet of the nature trails and public parks, there is lively Greektown! Known by locals simply as “The Danforth”, Danforth Avenue is the place to go. Locals and tourists alike enjoy traditional Greek cuisine at established tavernas and pastry shops as well as an eclectic mix of foods from Ethiopian to Indian, and everything in between. The indie shops are a fantastic place to pick up some great gifts, delicious treats, beautiful clothes as well as fresh flowers and groceries.
The neighbourhood is also home to the beautiful Danforth Music Hall venue, celebrating it’s 100th BIrthday this year and the annual August event “Taste of the Danforth”. For an entire weekend the street is blocked to traffic, and you’ll see locals and not-so-locals celebrating with international food, music, dance and more!
